Clearwater Beach is one of the finest beaches in the Tampa Bay area - wide and long, with great sand and a gentle slope into the Gulf of Mexico. No wonder it's a beach vacation favorite for beach lovers and families.
It also consistently ranks among the best beaches in the entire US. There are miles of unspoiled beaches and islands to sun, build sand castles, hike and kayak. Be sure to check out the islands to the north - Honeymoon and Caladesi Island State Parks.
Popular attractions include great fishing and water sports including jet skiing, diving, dolphin spotting and even party cruises on a pirate ship.
While still a spring break calling spot, Clearwater Beach is very popular with families because it's close to Orlando, is laid back and has a quiet beach scene that's less edgy than other beach cities in Florida.
Although Cocoa Beach is closer to Orlando, Clearwater Beach is a very popular beach destination for travelers to the Orlando area who are looking to visit the beach for a few days - the locals are friendlier and the beach is really wide and goes on for miles. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Clearwater is similar to many coastal Florida cities and vacation spots in that there's a mainland city (Clearwater) and a beach community (Clearwater Beach). Although only a narrow bay separates the two, they are dramatically different in what they have to offer.
If you intend to go to Clearwater for your vacation, the best attractions and travel areas are near the beach.
In fact, it's the beach itself that is the number one attraction for Clearwater. It's really wide and is frequented about evenly between families and young adults - many of whom would make you think you were on hard-bodied South Beach.
Most recreational pursuits are aqua-oriented: Jet Ski, Parasail, high-speed offshore motor boating for the thrill seekers, and an equal number of more subdued activities such as a Pirate Ship cruise, mini-golf, nature and shelling tours and the like.
Clearwater Beach has changed considerably over recent years as a result of the Florida Real Estate boom, and many of the very inexpensive lodging facilities (many still available, though) that attracted many a Spring Breaker have been wiped clean off the map and have been resurrected into luxury condo buildings.
If you are looking for the best place to stay, consider the new Hyatt, the Marriott and Sheraton - both just to the south over the bridge on Sand Key.
